Global Course Compass

Your guide to navigating education abroad course options to stay on track with your academic goals

  University of British Columbia, Canada

Your Host Institution Tools

  • There are a few ways to explore course options at the University of British Columbia (UBC). You can browse course offerings by subject or see courses offered during a previous or upcoming year by referring to the Course Description section in the Academic Calendar. You can search by academic department and find a list of courses offered with a brief description.
  • The schedule of classes typically becomes available in April ahead of the new academic year.

  • Full time enrollment at UBC is 9 semester credits per semester (typically 3 courses) and is the required level to qualify for university housing and to maintain status for your Study Permit. The maximum number of credits per semester is 15 semester credits (typically 5 courses).

  • IMPORTANT: Course levels abroad do not necessarily correspond with course levels at OSU. If course level is important to your course selection, submit each course for pre-articulation using the transfer articulation reevaluation form as early as possible in your planning.

  • At UBC, 100-level courses are generally for first-year students, 200-level for second-year, and so on.

  • Refer to UBC's information about program and course restrictions. This information is updated in real time so if there are new restrictions in place, for example, for Term 2 (spring semester), they will be reflected on the website. There is a way to request access to graduate courses that requires the instructor’s permission.

  • Admitted incoming exchange students receive instructions from the UBC international office, Go Global, on how to submit a Final Course Request in April/September and Go Global will add most Arts & Sciences courses by the end of June/November.
  • Courses that must be added by Faculties/Departments will appear on a student’s schedule by August/September and then students will have the opportunity to make final adjustments prior to the add/drop deadline stated in the Academic Calendar (typically in the 3rd week of classes).

Remember courses abroad count as OSU credits and grades count towards your OSU GPA.

To explore if Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) grading could be an option for you, talk with your academic advisor. To request S/U grading for courses abroad, you'll need to secure approval from your academic advisor and submit the S/U request form in your OSU GO portal before 70% of the course is complete.

OSU Tools

  • For official determinations on how education abroad courses will be transcribed at OSU, submit each course using the transfer articulation reevaluation form

  • No need to wait! We recommend submitting courses as early as possible in your planning - even while exploring programs!

  • Since course articulation can affect your degree progress and planning, it's important to work closely with your academic advisor to understand how your courses abroad will fit into your academic plan.

  • Visit the OSU GO Education Abroad Course Articulation Database to view courses that previous OSU students have taken.
  • The database is not a comprehensive list of all courses available and may list courses that are not offered during your program cycle. Check out the host institution tools below fo up to date course offerings.
  • Previous articulations are a guide for how a course may appear on your OSU transcript. Given updates to course content, articulation standards, etc., how a course is articulated on your transcript may look different. If a course you plan to take abroad is essential for completion of degree requirements, submit the course information through the form above.
